Aliko Dangote, A Lion Of Africa

The man Aliko Dangote needs little or no introduction to many Africans. For the benefit of some of us non-africans, Nigeria's Dangote is Africa's richest man. He is ranked by Forbes Magazine as the 23rd richest person in the world and the richest in Africa.

He owns the Dangote Group, which has interests in commodities. The company operates in Nigeria and several other countries in Africa, including Benin, Cameroon, Togo, Ghana, South Africa and Zambia. As of March 2014, he had an estimated net worth of 25 billion USD. He is currently looking beyond cement, sugar and flour (the three commodities that built his fortune) to the oil business. In April he announced $9 billion in financing from a consortium of local and international lenders to construct a private oil refinery and fertilizer and petrochemical complex in the country. In August he said he would invest $1 billion in commercial rice farming and modern rice mills. His publicly traded Dangote Cement is also grabbing new markets in Africa, with $750 million in new plants planned for Kenya and Niger.

Dangote was born on 10th April 1957 into a wealthy family in Kano, Nigeria. He refused to be distracted but rather focused on his ambition despite being born with a silver spoon. He studied business at the Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt and thereafter returned to Nigeria. At the youthful age of 21 he got a loan of 500,000 NGN (3,500 USD) from his uncle Sanusi Abdulkadir Dantata which he has today turned into a mega fortune.he is today Africa’s leading businessman. His chain of companies is spread across 16 countries around the world and he has over 15,000 people in his employ.

The Kano State born business magnate is described as a lion of Africa in terms of business, second to none when it comes to investing in Africa, a capitalist with a big heart who puts his money where his mouth is and his foundation is a step forward for a man who wants to make a difference on the continent. Like every man, this amiable billionaire too has his own humble beginning. But his is one that will inspire any ambitious soul any day,  any time.

With businesses spanning across the continent Dangote has made an impact not only in the industries he invests in but also to the lives of people.

Apart from him being business minded, he is also a philanthropist of note. He has collaborated with the Bill Gates Foundation to invest in the provision of health, especially the eradication of polio in Africa and other parts of the world, where the disease is still prevalent.
